[RV fan] How do I connect a cigarette lighter plug to a 12V RV fan?
Connecting a cigarette lighter plug to a 12V RV fan is a straightforward process that can be completed in a few simple steps. Here's how:
Materials needed:
- 12V RV fan
- Cigarette lighter plug
- Wire cutters/strippers
- Electrical tape or heat shrink tubing
- Soldering iron and solder (optional)
Steps:
1. Begin by cutting the wire on the cigarette lighter plug to the desired length. Make sure to leave enough wire to reach the RV fan comfortably.
2. Strip the ends of the wires on both the cigarette lighter plug and the RV fan. You should have two wires on the cigarette lighter plug (positive and negative) and two wires on the RV fan (positive and negative).
3. Identify which wire on the RV fan is positive and which is negative. This information should be indicated in the fan's manual or on the fan itself. If you are unsure, you can use a multimeter to test which wire is positive and negative.
4. Twist the positive wire from the cigarette lighter plug to the positive wire from the RV fan. Repeat this process for the negative wires.
5. If you have a soldering iron, you can use it to solder the wires together for a more secure connection. If you don't have a soldering iron, you can skip this step.
6. Cover each connection with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to protect them and prevent any shorts.7.
7. Test the connection by plugging the cigarette lighter plug into a 12V power source and turning on the RV fan.
If you want to see the detial step illustration, Please follow the below illustration to DIY the wire. Noticed that all the voltage is 12V. Do not attempt to use other voltage.

Prepare the correct cable plug
Prepare the original fan power cable and a 12-volts cigarette lighter. Make sure cigarette light another side is naked wire. If not, please splice the wires to naked. Please make sure 12V DC plug jack is 5.5mm/2.5mm. Begin by cutting the wire on the cigarette lighter plug to the desired length. Make sure to leave enough wire to reach the RV fan comfortable. Strip the ends of the wires on both the cigarette lighter plug and the RV fan. You should have two wires on the cigarette lighter plug (positive and negative) and two wires on the RV fan (positive and negative). Identify which wire on the RV fan is positive and which is negative. This information should be indicated in the fan's manual or on the fan itself. If you are unsure, you can use a multimeter to test which wire is positive and negative.
Twist the two wires of cigarette lighter & DC plug to connect.
Twist the positive wire from the cigarette lighter plug to the positive wire from the RV fan. Repeat this process for the negative wires.
Melt and solder the wires.
If you have a soldering iron, you can use it to solder the wires together for a more secure connection. If you don't have a soldering iron, you can skip this step. Prepare a solder to melt and soldering the wires preventing oxidation. Melt solder on the tip of your soldering iron to prevent oxidation. Please notice that don’t touch the end of the soldering iron while it’s hot since it can cause severe burns.
Tape the wires
Prepare the anti-static electricity tape to the wires. Cover each connection with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to protect them and prevent any shorts
