What is a Cooling Fan and a Blower Fan? What’s the difference between them?
Cooling Fan (Axial Fan)
Typically uses an axial design, with airflow parallel to the fan shaft. It generates a wide area of airflow, making it suitable for cooling heatsinks, electronic components, or open spaces directly.
Blower Fan (Centrifugal Fan)
Uses a centrifugal design, drawing air in from the inlet and pushing it out perpendicular to the fan shaft. It creates higher static pressure, ideal for confined spaces or applications where airflow must be directed through a duct or specific pathway.
When to Choose a Cooling Fan
Wide-area cooling needed: e.g., PC cases, heatsinks, or open airflow circulation.
Spacious installation: Air can flow freely without restrictions.
Low-noise preference: Axial fans are generally quieter at lower speeds.
When to Choose a Blower Fan
Confined space or directed airflow required: e.g., servers, projectors, or compact enclosures.
High static pressure needed: To push air through heatsinks, filters, or narrow ducts.
Ducted airflow design: Airflow must be concentrated and directed to a specific area.
Simple Rule of Thumb
:
If you need broad cooling coverage and quieter operation → choose a Cooling Fan (Axial Fan).
If you need focused airflow in tight spaces with high static pressure → choose a Blower Fan (Centrifugal Fan).
